REFERENCE > ACCESSING SPECIAL CHARACTERS


If you typeset in a language other than English, you are probably already familiar with the keyboard combinations required to achieve vowel characters compounded with the appropriate accent. Even if you know how to find the most common ones, you might still be unfamiliar with the location of other special characters that are available in most professional fonts. The table below should be a useful reference chart for you, with the added bonus that it also includes reference information for the HTML coding required to achieve these special characters in your web documents.


For your benefit, the special characters have been divided up into the following sections for easy reference:



A couple of things you should note: When you use the characters in your HTML, do not leave a space between the ampersand (&) and the rest of the characters as we have done here--we added the space so that the text would display, rather than the special characters. Mac users note that the table below refers to the "option" key as "opt" and the use of a PLUS sign indicates that you first perform the command to the left of the PLUS sign in combination (i.e. by pressing all the designated keys at the same time), letting go of the keys, and then typing the character to the right of the plus sign.

Also note that not all of these characters will show up in your web or in DTP documents if you are using a font that has a limited character set.
